“The appearance of colour also varies according as to whether it is seen as a ‘surface’ or ‘film’ colour…Surface colour may vary in appearance with the type of surface, according to whether it is dull, rough or shiny in texture. Light is reflected in a different manner by shiny surfaces, or by dull, or matt surfaces, and this affects the appearance of colour” page 75

“It seems that we learn by experience to distinguish the colour of the illumination, as judged by the general colour of the surroundings, from the colour inherent in the surface; and are able to compensate to some extent for the former in our judgements of the latter. This is especially likely to happen if the surface belongs to some particular well-known object- for instance, the red of a pillar-box or the green of grass” page 78
